A cardiologist was gunned down in Rajinder Nagar of New Delhi early this morning, police said. The police have arrested a suspect in the case. The doctor was taken to a hospital where he was declared brought dead.

A prominent cardiologist with Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital was shot dead by his maid’s lover — an ex-army man — at his bungalow early Wednesday morning.

Dr Sanjeev Dhawan, 51, became the victim of 36-year-old Dharmendra Kumar Tandon’s obsession with Sangeeta Kaur, who had been hired by Dhawan recently.

At 2.40am on Wednesday, Tandon, who served in J&K and Siachen valley before being discharged from the Indian Army because of a knee injury in 2010, arrived at Dhawan’s rented bungalow in New Rajinder Nagar.

Once there, he called Kaur, with whom he shared a rocky relationship, to ask her to leave with him. When she did not take his calls, Tandon went up to the landlord’s house on the second floor and entered into a scuffle with him.

“Dhawan’s landlord did not let Tandon see the doctor and managed to push him down to the street, which angered him and he opened fire,” said a police officer.

Tandon — dressed in camouflage shirt, pants, black leather boots and carrying his licensed rifle — fired five shots in the direction of the house, and the last one hit Dhawan, who had come to his first-floor balcony to see what the commotion was about.

Tandon fled the scene, but was apprehended near Karol Bagh Metro station after being lured there by Kaur. Dhawan was rushed to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, where he was declared dead. Incidentally, Tandon, who worked as a security guard at a hotel in Gurgaon, had warned Dhawan about dire consequences on two occasions, the most recent one being a few hours before Wednesday’s crime.

Though he has a family and three kids in Bilaspur, Uttar Pradesh, Tandon began aggressively pursuing Kaur, a recent divorcee, after bumping into her at the New Delhi Railway Station. “Tandon had previously been jailed for 16 days after he assaulted Sangeeta's previous employer in south Delhi’s Sarita Vihar a few months ago,” the officer said.
