The Congress is taking the allegations of corruption in the Games projects seriously and has indicated that stern action would be taken against those found guilty but only after the event is over.

Though the party maintains that allegations of irregularities are bringing “disrepute” to the country as the Games are being held in India for the first time, it has called upon the people and the organisers to strive for the successful conduct of the event.

“This is the main priority for both the Congress and the UPA government,” a leader said. But at the same time, the party is not turning a blind eye to the corruption charges and would like to go deeper into the matter.

“Corruption is corruption… no matter what the amount. There will be a thorough probe into all the allegations once the Games are over,” another senior party functionary said.

With less than two months to go for the Games, the party does not want to disturb the present arrangement and is backing OC chairman Suresh Kalmadi.

“If he resigns because of all these allegations, who will fill his shoes? The move will obstruct the games management,” the functionary said.
