A 23-year-old security supervisor was allegedly shot at by armed assailants when he stopped them from gaining entry into a mall premises on Thursday evening, police said.
“The incident took place outside the EDM Mall Complex at 5:30pm. The victim has been identified as Manoj Kumar. He was shot at when he stopped a group of five men from entering the mall’s complex,” said OP Mishra, deputy commissioner of police (east).
Police said the assailants, who were travelling in a Tata Safari, were about to enter the mall compound when a security guard posted there saw that they were carrying weapons.
“He asked them to deposit the weapons — a double barrel countrymade gun and an air gun — at the entrance to which they objected. It is then that the said security guard called his supervisor, Manoj Kumar to deal with the issue,” said a senior police officer.
A scuffle then ensued between Kumar and the assailants during which one of them fired a stray round from the airgun.
“The pellet hit Kumar in his arm as the men fled the scene. Several police teams were patrolling the area at that moment and one of them chased the gang’s vehicle and apprehended one of the assailants,” the officer said. “A manhunt has been launched to apprehend his aides,” Mishra added.
