A baby was abandoned by a man in north Delhi’s Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital on Sunday afternoon. The one-year-old girl was found lying on the floor near the emergency lift by hospital staff around 2 pm.

“One of our lift men spotted a person holding the child. Then, a patient stepped in to the lift and the lift man lost sight of the person with the baby. By the time the lift went to the second floor and returned, the person had left, leaving the crying child on the floor. He waited for more than an hour with the baby but the person did not return,” said a source in the hospital.

When the lift man realised no one was going to take charge of the crying baby, he informed the administration.

“We admitted the child and did a thorough examination of her. She was absolutely fine,” said a senior doctor in the hospital, requesting anonymity.

At first, the officials thought that her mother must be around in the hospital. But when no one turned up to claim the baby, they informed the Rohini north police station.

“It does seem to be a case of abandonment, but we cannot say anything for sure. It is for the police to investigate,” said the doctor.

The child was given primary treatment at the hospital. She was presented to the child welfare committee. The CWC sent the child to Holy Cross Children’s home in Dhirpur.
