A professional tabla player and his cousin were arrested for allegedly battering to death one of their friends, the police said on Tuesday.
According to the police, the two had thrashed the victim with a baseball bat on New Year’s Eve in west Delhi. “Harnam Singh, 24, and his cousin Harjeet Singh, 18, were arrested for beating their friend, Rocky, 23. Harnam confessed to have taken the extreme step because he suspected that the victim used to send ‘obscene’ text messages to his girlfriend,” said V Renganathan, deputy commissioner of police (west).
“The incident came to light on January 1 when Rocky’s body was found in Keshavpuram. There were injuries, inflicted with a blunt object, on the victim’s body and head,” said a senior police officer.
The police, while questioning Rocky's friends and close relatives in the case, focused on Harnam, a tabla player, and Harjeet, a Class 10 student at a local school.
“Harnam broke down during routine questioning and confessed. He said he was angry about Rocky sending obscene messages and frequently calling Harnam’s girlfriend. He then planned the murder with Harjeet and lured Rocky to a desolate spot on the pretext of a party,” the officer said.
According to the police, the three got drunk together; after that they got into an argument over the suspected lewd messages. “Harnam, who had a baseball bat, started pounding Rocky with it,” the DCP said. The two then left Rocky to bleed to death, said the police.
