A 26-year-old Nepalese national was arrested for allegedly kidnapping and murdering the four-year-old son of his neighbour who did not like his affection towards his child, police said on Tuesday.
To seek revenge and ransom, the man who initially pretended to trace the child along with his father, concocted stories of how the child had been kidnapped when he himself had taken the child to a jungle and slit his throat a day after he was reported missing.
The arrested has been identified as Shyam Babu Chowd-hary, who hails from Sarlahee in Nepal. He was apprehended on July 4 following his interrogation where he confessed to the crime, said Chayya Sharma, DCP (south) .
According to police, Shyam and the victim’s father, Suresh Chowdhary, are neighbours in Mehrauli and both are vegetable vendors. Shyam had become affectionate towards the child which Suresh objected to.
Therefore, Shyam decided to seek revenge and hatched a plan to kidnap the child and in the process demand a ransom.
On May 21, Suresh informed the police that his son Abhishek had been missing and that it was possible that he must have got lost in a procession headed to Ajmer Sharif in Rajasthan that was passing by the locality.
A missing report was lodged, and investigations taken up.
On June 3, Suresh approa-ched the police saying he found a letter wherein the kidnapper demanded a ransom of Rs 5 lakh and on June 24, another letter demanding R3 lakh. Interest-ingly, police said, both the letters were discovered by Shyam.
On June 26, Suresh sent Shyam to negotiate with the ‘kidnappers’ who had categorically stated that only Shyam be sent to negotiate the deal. “He returned saying five persons in a vehicle met him and snatched his mobile and a bag which he had taken with him and told him that they would release the child after receiving the ransom money,” said Sharma.
The police found this suspicious since Shyam too was in constant touch with police along with Suresh. “He was interrogated, during which he confessed to kidnapping and killing the child on May 21 in the jungle in Jamali Kamali. He led the police to the murder spot where the child’s 40-day-old decomposed body was recovered. He told us that he concocted the story of kidnappers and wrote fake ransom letters to win the confidence of Suresh in order to extract ransom money,” Sharma said.
Shyam Babu had already sent his family, a wife and two children, to his native village in Nepal and was planning to escape with the ransom money, if he would have received the same from the Suresh, police said.
