Delhi police have nabbed a 30-year-old man for stealing R80 lakh from his in-laws' house in Vasant Kunj.
Harish Nagpal, a head cashier with Bank of Baroda, had lodged a police complaint saying cash and jewellery worth Rs 1 crore was missing from his house. During their investigation, the police found that Nagpal's son-in-law was missing.
"We have arrested Mahender Singh alias Manish Sharma and recovered R78 lakh cash from him apart from jewellery and a car," said Chhaya Sharma, DCP (south).
Sharma said Nagpal has a physically handicapped daughter for whom the family was looking for a match. They also placed a matrimonial advertisement in August 2010. But Nagpal had put a condition that the groom will have to stay with their family due to his daughter's condition, police said.
The police found that Manish Sharma, who was already married, had responded to the advertisement. He had even introduced his wife Vijeta as his sister to the Nagpal family. Vijeta has also been arrested in the case.
"The accused realised that the girl's family was well-to-do. So he hatched a plan of marrying her and then stealing their valuables later," the DCP added.
Police said last month Sharma told his father-in-law that his business was not doing very well. Nagpal agreed to purchase a shop for his son-in-law and even sold a property in Sarojini Nagar for Rs 80 lakh to help the accused. Sharma knew about the money and on July 23 he made away with the money and jewellery from the house. He kept the money with his first wife Vijeta in Burari. But on realising that the police were looking for him, he ran away with his wife and children to Bareilly, police said.
