A 22-year-old BCA student suffered severe burns during a reported cylinder blast at his home near Moti Bagh on Sunday, police said. The family, however, claims he was set on fire over a property dispute.

Police have detained two of his cousins, one of them an MBA student.

“The fire was caused by a cylinder blast. We are finding out if it was accidental or deliberate. The victim has a property dispute with one of his uncles,” said Parmaditya, additional deputy commissioner of police (southwest).

Amit Singh, the victim, was living with his maternal uncle in Bawana after his parents died 12 years ago.

“For the past two years, he began showing an interest in his property that was being managed by his uncle Rajender Singh who lives next door. When he began interfering and asked about the rent that he got from his property, Rajender got angry and decided to teach him a lesson,” said Bijender Singh, another uncle of the victim.

Singh alleged that on Sunday when Amit was sleeping in his room, the two cousins Ravindra Singh (24) and Virendra Singh (22), a law student, entered and set him on fire.

“We did not know what had happened. My daughter told me that there was some commotion outside,” said Nisha Devi, the mother of the two suspects.

“We are investigating and have lodged a case of attempt to murder,” said the officer.
