A 25-year-old man was arrested from Chennai for allegedly attempting to murder his grandmother during a robbery attempt in her house in the Capital a year ago.

Police said the incident took place in Baljeet Nagar on May 3, 2009.

The accused has been identified as Nitin Sharma (25).

Nitin Gupta (23), a jeweller who received stolen articles from Sharma, has also been arrested.

Police said at the time of the incident, Sharma demanded gold bangles from his grandmother Kaushalya Devi. However, when she refused, he allegedly put a cloth in her mouth and attempted to strangulate her.

“She became unconscious and Sharma fled after taking her gold bangles,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Jaspal Singh.

According to police, they received information that Sharma was spotted in Cudol in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, after which a police team went to Chennai and arrested him.

“As he could not be traced initially, the court had declared him a proclaimed offender. He told police that he was in need of money and therefore, when his grandmother refused to hand over her bangles, he got agitated and tried to kill her,” said Singh.

“He further disclosed that he had sold the gold bangles to Gupta,” added Singh. After taking the cash, Sharma left Delhi and hid in Jammu, Mumbai and Chennai. Before his arrest, he was working at a cyber cafe in Chennai.

Police claimed Sharma had stolen articles from his grandmother’s house on earlier occasions too.
