A 25-year-old man was killed while his wife and sister suffered minor injuries after the speeding Hyundai Tucson SUV they were travelling in turned turtle after hitting a road divider in south Delhi's Vasant Kunj late on Monday night.
The accident took place around 11.45 pm on Nelson Mandela Marg near the Ambience mall when the victims were heading towards Vasant Vihar, police said on Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Aditya Goel and he lived with his family in Saraswati Vihar area in northwest Delhi. They were returning home after visiting a relative's house in C-Block, Vasant Vihar when the accident happened.
Police said the SUV was moving at high speed and Goel, who was driving the vehicle, took another other lane meant for taking a U-turn by mistake. When Goel realised his mistake, he pressed the brakes to control his vehicle.
"Since the vehicle was speeding, Goel could not control his vehicle. The SUV rammed the divider when Goel was negotiating the turn and overturned. Goel suffered critical injuries and was trapped inside the vehicle. His wife and sister, however, sustained only minor injuries," said a senior police officer.
All the three victims, the officer said, were rescued and rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Center, where doctors pronounced Goel dead on arrival. Goel's wife and sister were administered primary medical attention and discharged later.
