A 30-year-old man allegedly murdered a woman by strangulating her with a rope inside a hotel room at the new bus stand area of Ghaziabad on Monday afternoon. He also tried to commit suicide by consuming sleeping pills after killing the woman, police said.

The incident occurred inside room number 210 at Pelican Hotel in Ghaziabad after Manoj Kumar Tyagi and Seema Kumari, both 25 years old, checked into the hotel around 2pm on Monday. They checked-in as husband and wife.

Hotel manager CPK Nair said the man also submitted an identity proof when the hotel staff asked for it. “They said that they wanted to celebrate a birthday,” Nair said.

When police reached the spot, the woman’s body was lying in the room, while Tyagi was unconscious.

“He had consumed around 40 sleeping pills after strangulating her and also called his older brother from his mobile phone. This led us to him to the hotel,” superintendent of police (SP) JK Shahi said.

The woman was a resident of Dilshad Garden area of Delhi, while Tyagi resides at Bank Colony area of Mandoli in Delhi.

“We also recovered a suicide-note written by Tyagi from the scene of crime. In his suicide note, Tyagi alleged that the woman wanted to kill him with the help of her friends and he was under tremendous mental torture,” a police official said.

Tyagi was later rushed to the MMG hospital, where his condition was stated to be critical but out of danger.

“If her survives, we will book him for the murder of the woman,” the SP told the Hindustan Times.
