Delhi police have arrested a man for torturing and killing his 29-year-old wife over dowry.
Police said the accused, Vinod Daboria, had thrashed his wife Sumita in south Delhi's RK Puram Sector 1 on Saturday night. On Monday morning, he called the police control room, saying his wife has committed suicide by consuming something poisonous.
However, visible injury marks on the body of the victim and preliminary autopsy report confirmed that it was a case of murder. Police immediately arrested Vinod and booked him for his wife's murder and subjecting her to cruelty.
Police said in order to avoid the body from rotting, the accused allegedly kept it on ice slabs for 40 hours. He had killed her on Saturday, police said.
Sumita and Vinod got married in 2004 and they have a six-year-old son. Her family told the police that Vinod and his family used to torture Sumita physically and mentally.
"Vinod had been torturing my sister for dowry and he constantly beat her up. But for the past couple of months, Vinod started pressuring us to give him a share in our property. He wanted us to hand over our Kalkaji flat to him. He had even sent us a legal notice in this regard," said Sumitra, elder sister of the victim.
According to Sumitra, she had last spoken to her sister on Saturday night. She said her sister had said that her life was in danger.
"The next morning we made repeated attempts to contact her but her phone was switched off. On Monday around 10 am, police called me to inform that my sister is no more," added Sumitra.
"Prima facie it appears that Vinod murdered her on the same night and kept her body on ice slabs to avoid the foul smell of the body from spreading," said the officer.
