A man allegedly killed his wife with a pair of scissors on Friday night and then committed suicide by jumping in front of a moving train in East Delhi's Gandhi Nagar.

Neeraj Bajpayee, 36, and Pooja, 32, had been married since 2006. Pooja, a family member claims, had registered a dowry case against Neeraj last year.

"The couple used to have frequent fights and Pooja often was a victim of domestic violence. Fed up, she got a dowry case registered against him in May 2014. This made their relationship even worse," said Bhavna, a family member.

Family members said a similar argument broke out between the couple on Friday but they didn't think much of it at that time.

At the time of the incident, Bhavna claimed that she had gone for a medical check-up.

"When I tried calling him around 5pm, he (Neeraj) disconnected the phone saying that he couldn't talk more as they both were fighting again," Bhavna said.

Sensing something unusual in the tone of her brother's voice, Bhavna alerted the police. When a police patrol team arrived at the house and investigated, they did not find anything that suggested murder.

A police officer said Bhavna discovered Pooja's body at approximately 8pm on her return. "Upon entering the couple's room, she (Bhavna) discovered Pooja lying in a pool of blood with her throat slit and a pair of scissors lying next to her," said a police officer.

The couple have two children - 6 and 8 years old. They claimed that they saw their father, in blood-stained clothes, rush out of the house.

"The family members immediately alerted the police and a case of murder was registered at the Gandhi Nagar police station," said Ajay Kumar DCP (East).

A police officer claimed that a hunt for Neeraj was launched but then his body was found on Saturday morning near the railway tracks behind their house.

Police claim that after killing his wife, Neeraj used her blood to write a note accusing her and her family members of his death, said police. Another suicide note was found in the room that may have been written by the husband, police added.

Both the bodies have been sent for autopsy. The police will confirm the cause of death only upon receiving the autopsy report. Further investigations are underway.
