A 10-month-old girl was allegedly kidnapped, taken to a wooded area and raped by a construction labourer in Vikaspuri in west Delhi on Friday evening. The accused has been arrested.

The girl reportedly crawled out of her house when Vijay spotted her and took her to a nearby wooded area where he molested her. The girl’s parents, who work as daily wage labourers, were not at home at the time of the incident.

Vijay left the girl in the bushes after she fell unconscious, presuming she was dead. The matter came to the fore after the girl’s parents returned home and started looking for her.

“The girl’s father found her in the bushes, bleeding from her private parts. He then rushed her to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, where she was admitted to the intensive care unit. She will undergo a surgery tomorrow (on Sunday),” a senior police officer said.

Sources said the police team investigating the case found the mobile phone of the accused from the spot. After he was identified, a raid was conducted at his residence, but he was missing. A raid was conducted at his hideouts and he was arrested. Some locals also told the police they had seen Vijay consuming alcohol and playing with the girl.

“Vijay was arrested just a few hours later. An FIR under sections 376 (rape) and POCSO Act has been registered against him. He had allegedly kidnapped the girl and gagged her when she started crying. He allegedly took her to the jungle and sexually assaulted her. There were torture marks on her body as well. She has been admitted to the hospital and is recuperating,” a senior police officer said.

In his statement, the girl’s father told the police he found his daughter bleeding in the bushes with a bloodstained cloth around her neck. He told the police that Vijay even tried to strangle her to death.

“Vijay was known to the girl’s family. Vijay and her father were employed by the same contractor to construct a boundary wall in the area,” a police officer said.

DCW chief Swati Maliwal also visited the hospital and met the family members of the child. “Woke up to another brutal rape in the Capital. This time of a 1 year old. Horrific...Couldn’t dare to look at her face. Been operated upon... (sic)” Maliwal tweeted.
