A 26-year-old factory worker was stabbed to death with a screwdriver in an alleged mugging incident in southwest Delhi on Wednesday night, the police said.
“The incident took place at 9.30pm in Sagarpur area, near the Vasishtha Park in D block, when the deceased, identified as Virender Kumar, was intercepted by four men,” said Sharad Aggarwal, deputy commissioner of police (southwest).
According to the police, Kumar worked at an embroidery factory in northwest Delhi's Janakpuri. He was on his way home when the incident occurred.
“The assailants asked him to hand over his belongings following which a scuffle ensued, in which he was stabbed. We were intimated by a group of local residents who saw the assailants fleeing. A PCR van took Kumar to the nearby Shakuntala Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival,” said a senior police officer.
The police said the assailants' intent was yet to be ascertained. They, however, ruled out failure to rob the victim as the motive.
“We suspect that Kumar had some fight with the assailants, who we believe were known to him. We have detained some people, however, no arrests have been made in the case yet,” said the officer.
“We have registered a case and are looking for the accused,” Aggarwal said.
