A 35-year-old businessman and his associates were arrested on Thursday for stage-managing a robbery at his own home in Safdarjung Enclave on Monday.
According to the police, Tarun Kumar Khandelwal wanted to get his hands on his family's ancestral jewels in order to pay-off a huge debt that he had incurred in futures gold trading over the years.
"Three of Khandelwal's associates — Salim (23), Suraj (22) and Monu (20) — have also been arrested. Khandelwal had engaged the trio to carry out the dramatic robbery," H.G.S Dhaliwal, DCP (south) said.
Salim had been as a tenant at Khandelwal’s residence for 12 years. The police said the knives and ropes used in the crime were also provided to the three men by Khandelwal.
He said investigators zeroed-in on Khandelwal after they discovered that he was engaged in a long phone conversation at the time of the incident, though he had told police that the assailants had tied up his hands during the robbery.
The police said Khandelwal broke down during interrogation and admitted to have hatched a conspiracy to rob his own house.
"His grandmother had died a week ago, leaving behind a huge amount of jewellery in her cupboard. His motive was to obtain the jewellery and any other valuables," said a senior police officer from the investigation team.
