A chain-snatching robbery went horribly wrong for the 20-year-old thief in the Vasundhara area of Ghaziabad on Saturday evening, as he swallowed a 10gm gold chain due to the fear of being caught by the police.
The incident occurred when a 55-year-old woman, identified as Malti Jha of Vasundhara Sector 6, was taken by surprise when the accused, identified at Deepak Yadav (20), who was on a scooter, snatched her gold chain and tried to flee.
“The victim immediately alerted the local residents who managed to nab Yadav. Fearing police action, he swallowed the chain in a bid to escape arrest,” said Indirapuram SHO Rajesh Dwivedi.
The Ghaziabad police played smart to confirm the robbery. They took Yadav to Vasundhara Hospital at Sector 17 and got his X-ray done, which confirmed the location of the robbed gold chain near his chest.
“The doctors confirmed that the chain was located near his chest area and could not be taken out after initial treatment,” the SHO said.
After his return from the hospital, Yadav was booked under Section 392 (robbery) of IPC at Indirapuram police station on a complaint lodged by victim’s son, Naveen Kumar Jha.
The police said it would take a surgery to get the stuck gold chain out of Yadav’s body. “We will produce him before the court on Sunday and would later take him to the hospital to recover the gold chain,” Dwivedi said.
Yadav, presently a resident of Kanawni area near Indirapuram, is reported to be a first-timer in crime and had robbed the gold chain to bear his routine expenses. He had also performed a court marriage with a woman last year.
“He has no previous criminal records as per our investigations,” Dwivedi said.
