Mangolpuri sexual assault case

The Congress, the opposition party in the north municipal corporation, on Wednesday demanded a CBI enquiry into the Mangolpuri sexual assault case and criticised the mayor for not visiting the victim’s family.

Leader of Opposition Mukesh Goel slammed the interim report on the incident and said the ruling party had not been able to fix responsibility for the neglect that led to the incident.

“The horrific incident happened despite the fact both the mayor and the education committee chairman are women. The office-bearers have not even visited the family of the victim.

"Both of them should take moral responsibility and resign from their posts,” demanded Goel.

The interim report was on Tuesday submitted by a five-member committee that suggested measures to strengthen the security of children in schools.

The measures included installing CCTV cameras in schools and recruiting guards. It also suggested barbed wires on boundary walls.

The report had not held any staff responsible for the assault, but put greater accountability on principals and class teachers of primary schools to ensure the safety of women.

Chairman of the standing committee Yogender Chandolia defended the report and said that until the police completed its investigation, it would not be feasible to blame anyone.

“We have already suspended five officials as a preliminary measure. If the police find anyone guilty, we will ensure the person is punished,” he said.

The corporation organised a sensitisation programme for school principals in the aftermath of the assault case.

One of the suggestions that came up during the programme was the introduction of sex education in schools so that children can distinguish between “good touch” and “bad touch”.
