A 46-year-old MLA from Manipur was killed when his car was hit by another vehicle on National Highway-24 on Thursday afternoon.

Police said the legislator, identified as E Suraj Singh, was going towards Mayur Vihar Phase-II from Manipur House, at the time of the accident.

"Singh's car was taking a right turn from a traffic light at National Highway (NH)-24 when another car coming from Ghaziabad hit his vehicle. Singh was in the front seat and the speeding vehicle hit that side of his Santro car," a senior police officer said.

Singh was rushed to the Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. Singh's friend Rezi, who was driving the car, was injured and is being treated in a hospital.

Eyewitnesses told the police that there were four occupants in the vehicle that hit Singh's car.

The offending vehicle's driver managed to flee from the spot, leaving behind the car. Police have identified the car owner and sent a team to arrest the driver.

A case of causing death due to rash and negligent driving has been registered at the Pandav Nagar police station.
