‘Manmohan is PM candidate

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Sunday said there was no talk of projecting party general secretary Rahul Gandhi for the prime ministerial post. She described Congress’ declaration of Manmohan Singh as its PM as a ‘move to clear the air about his candidature and end speculation’.

“The party had declared Manmohan Singh as its prime ministerial candidate for the coming general elections so as to clear the air..., confusion and end the speculation,” Dikshit, who was here to unveil a statue of former prime minister Indira Gandhi, told reporters here.

She was replying to queries on why the Congress broke its tradition by declaring its leader ahead of polls.

There were no discussions about Rahul as the next prime ministerial candidate and such a notion was rejected by AICC president Sonia Gandhi herself, she said, replying to another query.

Rahul Gandhi was a youth attraction and has been assigned the task of inspiring the youth, she added.

The Delhi Chief Minister strongly denied that age can ever be a bar in politics and claimed that there was no substitute for 'political experience'. "The largest share of votes of students went to me (during Delhi Assembly polls)."

"One can remain in politics till one can work," she said adding the youth were usually prepared as the next generation leaders.
