Onions are being sold cheaper in the capital than last week when a drop in supplies jacked up its price alarmingly.

The price of onions went through the roof last week and hit R70 in the retail market, but the kitchen staple is now available in several parts of the city for Rs 60-62.

Members of the BJP continued to put up discount stalls for onions in various parts of Delhi even as Delhi government officials maintained that the situation would improve in the coming weeks because of an increase in supplies from southern states such as Tamil Nadu.

“The price has fallen over the past week because the supply improved. We are reviewing the situation almost daily and if any corrective action needs to be taken, we will do so,” said a senior Delhi government official.

Wholesalers also said the price had come down marginally, depending on the quality of the onions.

Retailers said the prices would drop further in the coming weeks because of the receding monsoons and increase in supplies of the kharif crop.
