The new Metro corridors will not give any jitters to residents of nearby areas.There have been complaints in the past from several parts of Delhi-NCR about the movement of trains causing tremors in their homes. These areas included Saket, Hauz Khas, Shahbad Mohammadpur, Mahipalpur, Gurgaon and Noida among others.
Following this, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has decided to introduce mass spring system technology on tracks to reduce these tremors.
This comes after its experts failed to bring in a lasting solution to curb vibration levels on the existing lines. “We will introduce mass spring system on tracks for the first time in underground sections to be built in phase 3. This technology will reduce vibration during trains’ movement,” said Kumar Keshav, director (projects), DMRC.
Earlier, the DMRC had asked the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) to monitor the vibrations at different spots and suggest preventive measures. Following experts’ recommendations, DMRC has reduced the trains’ speed to below 50 km/hr near critical areas. It also took ad-hoc measures like installing rubber pads and barriers to reduce speed of trains.
The mass spring system, however, is the first vibration-mitigating measure to be adopted by DMRC, officials said. “It will reduce vibration directly from the source,” Keshav added.
Mass spring systems, which use soft steel coil springs in concrete track slabs, provide the lowest achievable system frequencies to calm vibration levels. They are used in tunnels, at grade and on elevated tracks on tram, Metro, freight and high-speed lines.
