Any new group housing society coming up in the Capital will now have to treat and reuse waste water generated from its flats for watering plants or in toilets.
The Master Plan Delhi (MPD) 2021, which is under review at present, makes it mandatory for any new group housing system to install a mini-sewage treatment plant in its premises. The flats will have a ‘dual pipe’ system through which direct fresh water will be available in one pipe and treated water in the second pipe.
While fresh water will be used for drinking, washing or bathing, the recycled water will used to flush toilets or water plants in the gardens.
“The provision for dual piping system is present in the MPD 2021 and is soon going to be enforced for all the upcoming group housing societies. The system will also be made mandatory in commercial establishments and institutional buildings,” said a Delhi Development Authority (DDA) official, who didn’t wished to be named.
“The building plan of housing societies will now be approved only if they have the provision for the dual pipe system,” he said.
“The system was in use in some group housing societies that came up in Dwarka but after the new MPD 2021 was notified in 2007, the provision has been mandatory,” said AK Jain, former commissioner (planning), DDA.
Sources said that the provision has been made mandatory and approved by the authority and a circular has also been issued by the chief engineer (headquarter), DDA.
The cost of installing the mini-sewage treatment plant, which will treat waste water, will have to be borne by the group housing society.
The waste water generated in bathrooms and the kitchen will be collected in a tank and then sent for treatment. The treated water will then be stored in a separate tank and supplied to toilets and gardens.
“A huge amount of water is used for bathing, washing clothes and utensils. If this water is treated and used for other purposes, a lot of water can be saved,” the official said.
