Mayor Prithviraj Sawhney faced ire of Jamia Nagar residents during his visit to the area on Wednesday. Sawhney and MCD’s Leader of the House Subhash Arya were pushed by angry locals, prompting them to call off the tour.

Sawhney and Arya, along with health department officials, local elected representatives and mediapersons, were visiting the dengue-hit locality.

People were protesting the failure of authorities in cleaning the canal running besides the area. Arya said the MCD could not do it as it belonged to UP Irrigation Department. He defended the civic agency saying it still carried out the cleaning in view of the increasing number of dengue cases.

Not satisfied, the residents started shouting loudly, abusing pushing and shoving the team members.

Mayor’s security officials then whisked him and Arya away. Later, at the Town Hall, Sawhney told mediapersons that the crowd only used abusive language and did not attack him. “I can’t comment whether it (the incident) was planned or not. But public’s attitude was not correct....So we called off the tour,” he said.

He also said that owing to poor sanitation, additional 100 sanitation workers and additional 20 domestic breeding checkers have been deployed.
