The attempt on Shibu Das' life on Saturday evening allegedly followed a year's resentment and six months of estrangement from his wife of 16 years.

As she waited outside the operation theatre at the hospital with bated breath, Das's younger sister Anita cursed him for walking into his wife's lover's trap of death. "He had gone to meet one of our cousins at Loni yesterday. It was very late by the time he decided to leave, so I asked him to return today. He called me before he left but didn't mention a single word about meeting his wife's lover then," Anita said.

It was only when he was being carried into the operation theatre with a bullet injury in his upper back that Shibu broke his silence about the clandestine meeting.

The police's initial investigations into the incident have revealed that the murderous, and possibly lethal, assault on his life was perpetrated by one Deepak who allegedly lured Shibu to the Mayur Vihar Phase I metro station with the intent to get him out of his own and his wife's way.

"He used to stay near Shibu and his wife Anju's residence in the Trilokpuri area. Deepak used to visit the couple's residence often and slowly fell in love with her," said an officer.

However, it was only after a year that Shibu, a contractual driver, became privy to his wife's relationship with the neighbour and decided to part ways with Anju, apparently 'in the interest of the couple's only child' - a 17-year-old son. "There were constant fights between the two. So much so that he moved out of his own house and started staying with me at my residence," Anita said.

The police have registered a case of attempt to murder and are looking for Deepak.
