The unified MCD, which had announced 41 multi-level parking projects in the last five years, managed to complete work on just one before its split, the opposition Congress alleged on Tuesday.
The 41 projects include six public-private partnership projects in areas such as Defence Colony, Lajpat Nagar, South Extension and GK-I.
The Congress leaders alleged that the projects were stuck because the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) tried to rig the tender process.Farhad Suri, leader of the House of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), said only one project had been made operational, while work on 24 was yet to start. The parking lot at Pitampura, Q block, had seen just 2% progress in the last one year, he added.
The 41 sites would have created space for 17,000 vehicles, but in the past five years, space for only 90 cars has been made due to delays.
Several BJP and Congress councillors asked the SDMC to expedite parking work at the House meeting.
They demanded that projects in areas like Okhla and Badarpur, which often get congested due to space crunch, should be speeded up.
“Even if the parking projects are behind schedule, a board should be fixed at the site giving information like when was the foundation stone laid, first deadline and the latest deadline,” said Meghraj Chandela, Congress councillor.
Suri said the civic body should have first checked the ground reality and the areas before announcing the projects and wasting public money.
