The Delhi Assembly was rocked by allegations and counter-allegations over the MCD fake employee scam.

While Congress legislators pointed fingers at the BJP-led MCD stating that corruption in the civic body needed to be tackled more proactively, the latter said they were only unveiling the corruption that had persisted under the previous Congress regimes.

Congress MLA Anil Bhardwaj had taken up the issue during the special mention about the detection of over 22,853 “missing” employees after the implementation of a biometric attendance system.

He demanded a CBI probe be ordered in the fraud and the BJP-led MCD be dismissed. Opposition MLAs in turn also asked for a CBI probe, but insisted the Congress was behind the fraud.

“The scam started under Congress rule in MCD. A CBI inquiry should be ordered,” Jagdish Mukhi, former leader of Opposition said.

Delhi Assembly Speaker Yoganand Shastri said the leader of the House should demand a CBI inquiry into the matter if required, as members from both parties had demanded it.

“The leader of the House should look into the matter closely,” said Shastri.

The fact-finding committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is still verifying a number of bank accounts of its employees to find out about the 22,853 “missing” employees.

According to the civic agency a final report in this regard will be tabled within 20 days. “The committee was given a timeline of 30 days and merely 10 days have passed. A final report will be made available only after 20 days. Action will be taken against those found guilty,” said Subhash Arya, leader of the MCD House.
