A city court on Monday held the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) guilty of negligence that caused the death of a disabled businessman after he fell into an open drain.

The court has directed the corporation to pay a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the family of the deceased.

“Human life is precious and it is time that municipal authorities are held responsible for failing to exercise reasonable degree of care and caution expected of them in relation to the inhabitants of the area,” Additional District Judge Kamini Lau said.

The court awarded the amount to the victim’s wife Renu and his daughters for the loss of income, mental agony and social deprivation.

Thirtythree-year-old Jai Pal Singh drowned in a storm water drain in 2000.
