With thousands of people thronging the Ramlila Maidan to extend their support to Anna Hazare, ensuring proper sanitation facilities is turning out to be a difficult task for the civic agency.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is still finding it difficult to keep the ground clean, even as banana peels, plastic plates, bits of paper, water bottles strewn inside and outside the ground keep its staff busy.
Adding to the woes is lack of sanitation workers who are presently working in shifts. The MCD also put up dustbins at the site but the insufficient number isn’t helping matters.
“People were served food on the roadside, as many weren’t allowed to take their own food inside. The empty plates after the meal were left behind,” said Yogender Chandolia, chairman of MCD’s Standing Committee.
“Inside the ground, the MCD sanitation workers are working round-the-clock to clean the ground but because of the huge gathering there are some delays,” he said.
The MCD has been bringing crushed bricks to fill up puddles and level the ground to accommodate more people. On Sunday night, the civic body sprinkled anti-larvae medicines.
