A 30-year-old medical graduate was arrested for allegedly attacking a restaurant attendant with a surgical blade at the conclusion of a heated argument over using a toilet in south Delhi’s Hauz Khas, police said on Tuesday.
Ritul Yadav, who has recently completed his MBBS course from a medical college in Russia, slashed 35-year-old Umashankar’s neck below his Gautam Nagar residence on Monday morning before escaping -- only to be arrested hours later.
“Umashankar works at a small restaurant-cum-tea shop located right below Yadav’s rented accommodation. The altercation apparently occurred over the usage of a common toilet located next to his room,” said an officer.
According to the police, employees working at the small restaurant used the toilet, which bothered Yadav, who is currently preparing for a Medical Council of India (MCI) exam. He had complained to his landlord on several occasions.
On Monday morning, as he went down to the restaurant for some tea and breakfast, Yadav decided to confront Umashankar whom he had last seen using the toilet and had taunted on the previous evening.
“A verbal spat occurred at the end of which Yadav stormed up the staircase, leaving the argument midway - only to return two hours later - this time with a surgical blade in his hand,” the officer said.
Yadav, police said, then sought Umashankar out, grabbed hold of him by the scruff of his neck and slashed his neck before running away. The police were informed even as the victim’s co-workers rushed him to hospital. “Umashakar was admitted with a deep gash on his neck, but is out of danger. A case of attempt to murder has been registered against Yadav who was arrested on Monday evening,” the officer added.
