The only south Indian legislator in Delhi assembly
Profession: Bhardwaj is a full-time politician. She has been an active politician since 1972.
Education: Bhardwaj is a Graduate (non-collegiate) from Delhi University.
Political career: Bhardwaj is the only south Indian MLA in the Delhi assembly. “It is in my blood. My grandfather was the first Mayor of Palghat (in Kerala). Getting into politics was my childhood ambition,” she said.
Bhardwaj joined the Congress party when she was only 19 years old. She would take part in women agitation even during her school days. “I always took up women issues. I have been a part of the Youth Congress and Women Congress,” she said. Bhardwaj was first time elected to Delhi assembly in 1998 and was re-elected in 2003.
Family: Bhardwaj married a journalist in 1984. They live in IP Extension, Patparganj. Her husband works with a national newspaper. Priyadarshini, their only child, is a software engineer and began working with Kotak Mahindra in Pune recently. “I named her after Indiraji (Indira Gandhi) , who has always been my inspiration,” Bhardwaj said. Though she spends most of her time in social work, she loves listening to music and reading magazines during her free time. “Being a south Indian Brahmin, I have also been learning Carnatic music for the past three-four years. But I don’t riyaaz now and
only listen to old songs and classical music,” she said. Bhardwaj began her career in 1966 with the sales department of Super Bazaar. She has travelled widely across the country and has visited states like Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
Cars: Bhardwaj travels in a Maruti Esteem. Her family also owns Maruti 800 and a Daewoo Matiz.
