A day after a 19-year-old woman, the mother of two children, was gang-raped allegedly by six persons in south Delhi’s Mehrauli, one of the accused continues to elude the police. The other accused were arrested just a couple of hours after the incident.
All the accused were known to the victim, the police said on Sunday.
The absconding accused has been identified as Mendhak and he is a labourer. The arrested accused have been identified as Laddu, Ravan, Bhura, Jafar and Wasim. The police said the woman lived with her third husband, Rakesh, who had recently been released from jail on bail, in a temporary dwelling made near the pavements in Mehrauli area. The accused are her neighbours.
On Saturday evening, a police officer said, the woman was outside her home for when the one of the accused met her and took her a secluded place on the pretext of discussing a personal matter.
“When the woman reached the place, she found five of her other neighbours there. They overpowered her and took her behind bushes where they took turns to rape her. The woman claimed that all the accused repeated the act before abandoning her and escaping,” said a police officer, quoting the victim’s complaint.
After they left, the victim reached the Mehrauli police station and filed a complaint. She was rushed to a government hospital where her examination confirmed gang rape.
A case of gang rape was registered and five accused were arrested following raids conducted at their possible hideouts, the officer added.
Both of the woman’s former husbands had abandoned her, after which she married Rakesh.
