Mentally challenged girl goes missing

In a grim reminder of the brutal Dwarka rape-cum-murder case that the Delhi Police are miles from receiving a clue about, a 16-year-old mentally challenged girl was allegedly kidnapped from her residence in New Delhi’s Mandir Marg area four days ago.

The victim, a resident of the Lady Hardinge Hospital servant quarters, used to stay metres away from the residence of the 17-year-old who was sexually assaulted before her head was smashed with a boulder. The latter’s body was found in a vacant plot in sector 4 in Dwarka on December 1.

“This kidnapping was reported on February 3 and the victim has been identified as Nisha Singh. She used to stay at the Lady Hardinge Hospital’s compound,” said VA Gupta, additional deputy commissioner of police (New Delhi).

However, in this case too the local police are engaging themselves in a protracted investigation even as the victim’s family suspects that one of their neighbours is behind the incident.

“We have no doubt that one of our neighbours, the husband of one of her childhood friends, is responsible. We have been going to the police station daily for the last four days and have told the investigating officers to at least look into the matter from this angle - but to no avail,” rued Nisha’s elder sister Seema Singh, an executive at a private firm.

Sources said Nisha, who according to her family is mentally challenged, was washing clothes minutes before she was seen running out of the Lady Hardinge Hospital compound as per the CCTV footage retrieved from cameras installed at the facility’s exit gate.

The victim’s family claimed that the neighbour in question was missing for two days after the incident only to return on February 5.

“He just disappeared and we saw him in the locality only on February 5. His family kept giving us lame excuses saying he was away to fetch his cousin from the Anand Vihar ISBT or that he was out on a business deal during the two days. But the police are just not ready to listen to us,” Seema added.

Additional DCP Gupta said investigations were underway.
