Has the Metro impacted the traffic in Gurgaon?
Yes it has. At the toll plaza itself, on the expressway, there's a decline of at least 15,000 vehicles a day. This has also resulted into the less congestion at two more traffic bottlenecks in Gurgaon after the toll plaza — Shankar Chowk and IFFCO Chowk.
How can more and more people be encouraged to use Metro instead of private vehicles?
The only way is to improve the feeder service. Currently, due to lack of feeder services, a lot of people don't use the Metro.
What are the other ways that can help ease the congestion on roads?
The long pending project of 450 buses for city bus service will surely result into fewer cars on roads. The extension of Metro line is crucial.
Has the Metro created new bottlenecks?
Yes. We are witnessing jams caused cycle rickshaws and shared autos near Metros stations. We are taking several measures to solve this problem.
Do you have any suggestions for DMRC?
Due to lack of parking space, a large number of people park their vehicles on roads. We have asked the DMRC to increase capacity of parking lots.
I prefer Metro to my cars
Madan Mohan, Owner, Deneb & Pollux
In 2006 Toyota Motors recognised Madan Mohan's Deneb & Pollux as its most preferred business partner owning maximum number of Toyota Innovas by any single holding in India till date.
Though Mohan, who started in the summer of 2000, is a proud owner of a huge fleet of vintage cars and bikes, he prefers to travel by Metro to his office in Connaught Place at least twice a week.
Madan prefers the air-conditioned Metro to his many cars and finds it a more convenient and easy mode of transport.
Madan knows that in a Metro, he will reach office within an hour, which is not possible in a car thanks to the heavy traffic on roads.
According to him, a lot of people have been shifting their residence or buying new houses in Gurgaon due to this new development.
“It has definitely affected the real estate but its impact on the roads is not much. It is a big pain to travel by road, as traffic jams are never-ending even if one has to go till Mehrauli,” Mohan said.
He finds the Metro is a big boon to the city and thinks it has done wonders especially for the working class whether they come from Delhi or go there.
Connectivity is still an issue
Karan Bajwa General Manager, Microsoft
He travels all over the NCR but has never used a Metro due to his erratic timings.
The Metro has solved the problem for a lot of people but not for someone like him who has to go to places where there is no Metro connectivity.
This is the problem of quite a few people, which they think needed to be solved soon. Bajwa believes that it has benefited a large number of people who live within proximity to the stations and has made life easier for them to a great extent.
“As far as the impact of the Metro on the on-road traffic is concerned, there's no change. I travel all over Delhi and NCR and till now has seen no significant change in the traffic conditions. Traffic jams, especially during the peak hours, are the same,” said Bajwa.
Bajwa says the Metro has not resulted in decreasing the volume of traffic significantly .
