A 15-year-old girl was ruthlessly beaten over the past three days with hot iron rods, iron chains and hockey sticks. She was also suspected to have been sexually exploited by her brother-in-law. On Thursday she breathed her last, hours after the police rescued her from Bahadurgarh area in Ghaziabad.

Punita Singh (name changed), a resident of Bulandshahr district in Western UP and a student of Class VIII, had come to help her cousin Kavita Tomer, who had given birth to a baby some months ago.

Police said during her 10-day stay, the victim's brother-in-law Amit Tomer accused her of stealing Rs 2,000 from the house and some gold jewellery.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Capt. M.M. Baig said the victim's cousin sister and her husband had been ruthlessly beating her up for the last three days.

"Her brother-in-law also wanted to sexually exploit the girl," SP Baig added.

He said after accusing her of theft, the brother-in-law beat her up with iron chains, hockey sticks, which the police found in the house later, and also subjected her to torture using hot iron rods on her body.

Police said late on Wednesday night a neighbour called the police after he heard screams from the house. The police immediately rushed the girl to a hospital in Meerut, where she succumbed to her injuries. The police also suspect that the accused may have made video recordings of her alleged sexual exploitation.

The police have arrested the accused and his wife under sections 376 (rape), 302 (murder), 326 (causing hurt by dangerous weapons), 511 (punishment for attempting to commit offences) of the IPC.
