The role of the mother of the 13-year-old domestic help who was rescued from a doctor's couple house in Dwarka on March 29, has come under the scanner as investigators suspect she was forced to give statement in favour of the doctor couple.
Intriguingly, while the sources said the girl's mother had arrived in Delhi on Tuesday the Delhi Police told the court on Friday that they did not know the whereabouts of the mother of the minor maid.
"The girl's mother was traced on Saturday and was produced before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC). She recorded her statement, in which she claimed to be not aware of the real age of her daughter. But a team is in Gumla in Jharkhand to collect the relevant certificate confirmed she is a minor," said a senior police officer. The SDM of Gumla has been asked to verify that the woman is the real mother of the minor.
"The girl's mother has been changing her statement quite frequently. We are checking her credentials too. We first need to verify whether she is the real mother or not. Also if she was in Delhi for the past four days, where was she staying and who was bearing her expenditure. She was brought to Delhi by traffickers before the police team could reach her," the officer further said. The court on Friday had rejected the bail plea of Dr Sumita Verma, saying she might try to influence the mother of the girl. The woman in her statement told CWC that she belongs to a very poor family and was not aware of the fact that her daughter was subjected to such treatment. Although she requested for the custody of the girl, CWC said the girl will stay at the shelter house till the investigation is pending.
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) was also roped in on Friday and the panel members were present when the woman's statement was recorded at the CWC.
Sources said that traffickers are playing a big role in influencing girl's mother as she had been staying with them for the past four days. The girl had also claimed that the traffickers had picked her from her school.
