"It is the expression of anguish of minorities and deprived sections against the misrule of the CPI-M. They have lost faith in the CPI-M and their alliance," Ahamed told IANS.

In municipal elections held across West Bengal Sunday, the Trinamool snatched the prestigious Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) from the Left and also trounced the Marxists in scores of 80 other municipalities.

Showering praises on Banerjee, Ahamed said: "For Mamata, this is a big recognition for her ceaseless fight against the Marxists."

He said his party is also fighting the Marxists in his home state Kerala and would defeat the CPI-M-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the upcoming civic polls in the state. The IUML is a major partner in the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kerala.
