Facing criticism from BJP with reports about key papers related to the Adarsh Housing Society scam going missing, Congress on Friday said it was a "serious issue" if it has really happened.

"If papers have gone missing, it is definitely a serious issue. But only a state government official can answer on it. The issue concerns the state and is not related to the Centre," party spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed told reporters in New Delhi.

Accusing the Congress of trying to "cover up" the scam, BJP said reports of key papers pertaining to the scandal going missing was a "deliberate" move to protect important people involved in it.

"When the former Chief Minister of Maharashtra Ashok Chavan resigned over the issue, the files should have been kept carefully. This is a deliberate attempt by Congress to cover up the issue and protect key persons involved in the Adarsh housing scam," BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain told reporters in New Delhi.

He said BJP would do everything to "thwart attempts of the Congress to cover up the scam".

"There were key notings in the Adarsh file...how can it go missing? We believe there are bigger names involved in the housing scam and apart from Chavan, other wickets will fall."

The Congress spokesperson also downplayed the main Opposition party's criticism over Rahul Gandhi's statement made in Gujarat on Friday where the Congress leader compared Chief Minister Narendra Modi with Chinese revolutionary leader Mao.

"It's true that development took pace in China during Mao's period but there were also clashes. Rahul Gandhi must have made the statement in similar contexts while replying to questions," Ahmed said.
