Investigation into the gruesome murder case of Rehana Begum, the wife of Uttar Pradesh’s BSP MLA Haji Alim Choudhary, has revealed that the relationship between Rehana and her stepsons Danish and Anas had turned hostile after Choudhary’s decision of permanently moving in with Rehana at their new residence in Bulandshahr six months ago.

Danish and Anas are suspected to have killed Rehana over a property dispute and some personal grudges, the police said. Both the brothers are currently on the run.

Police said Danish held grudges against Rehana because of her proximity with his father and planned to kill her because he felt that Rehana — who already owned Choudhary’s Delhi property — would grab their other properties in Bulandshahr as well. Also, he had a strong feeling that Rehana was responsible for his mother Kehkasha’s sufferings and subsequent separation from his father, the police said.

Investigation into the murder case revealed that Choudhary had completely desolated Kehkasha and Danish because of his attachment to Rehana, whom he married in 1990 following a love affair.

“Though Danish and his brother Anas have not been interrogated about their motive behind Rehana’s murder because they are absconding, we have reasons to believe that Danish never approved of his father’s proximity to Rehana, who had become Choudhary’s favourite companion in almost all high-profile social and political gatherings,” said an investigating officer.

Moreover, the officer said, Choudhary was planning to open a bank account in Rehana’s name and deposit the entire money which he was supposed to receive after selling their flat in northeast Delhi.

“This probably was unacceptable to Danish who already was abandoned by his father and had been forced to earn his livelihood through his slaughterhouse business that he had started with his friend Mohammad Arif,” said the officer.

The police are also probing the role of Kehkasha who, they suspect, could have provoked her two sons to kill Rehana to settle scores with her. They have also not given a clean chit to the MLA and his younger brother Haji Yunus either as their alleged roles are also under scanner.

During investigation, it was learnt that around 7.30 pm on October 9, Danish, Anas and Arif’s driver Nadeem came to Rehana’s home. Anas gained a friendly entry into the house as Rehana knew him. Danish and Nadeem followed him. Danish shot Rehana dead while Nadeem stabbed her several times even after she was dead.

“The three then fled to Bulandshahr,” said VV Choudhry, additional CP (northeast).
