A 23-year-old man accused of robbing and stabbing a truck driver was allegedly tied to an electric pole and beaten to death in northwest Delhi’s Swaroop Nagar Extension near Bhalswa Dairy on Sunday morning.

Three persons, including the truck driver, were arrested in connection with the lynching. Twenty were detained for interrogation.

The deceased, identified as Rafiqur Rahman, and his five aides allegedly stabbed and robbed truck driver Ramakant Pandey when he went to a secluded spot to relieve himself, a police officer said.

Pandey had parked his truck for offloading in one of the godowns at the time of incident.

“The robbers robbed Pandey of Rs 7,000 and tried to flee when he raised an alarm. Other truck drivers and workers from the godowns and factories rushed to his help. Two workers Pawan and Rajkumar caught Rahman, but his aides managed to flee,” said the officer.

The three men tied Rahman to a pole and rained kicks and punches on him, he added.

“Many others joined the trio and attacked Rahman till he became unconscious. It appears his vital organs were damaged in the lynching,” he said.

Rahman’s family alleged that the three men broke his neck, slashed his limbs and demanded `5,000 from the family to spare him.

They also said around hundred factory workers and residents witnessed the incident though nobody attempted to help him.

Vijay Singh, DCP (northwest) said Rahman’s family complained to the police control room about the lynching at around 10 am.

When the police team reached the spot, they found Rahman unconscious and tied to an electric pole. “We rushed him to a hospital where doctors declared him dead on admission. A case of murder was registered at the Bhalswa Dairy police station,” said Singh.

He said Pandey, Pawan and Rajkumar were arrested and they awaited Rahman’s autopsy report to establish the exact cause of death.
