A protest by a group of residents against police insensitivity towards a student’s death turned violent, as they torched local Station House Officer’s (S.H.O) vehicle, in addition to damaging two DTC buses, in outer Delhi’s Aman Vihar area on Monday evening, police said.

"The residents descended on the Aman Vihar police station at 2 pm and the protest went on till 6 pm," said a senior police officer.

The agitating locals had to be lathi-charged and dispersed with teargas shells by officers from each police station in the district.

According to police, the locals were protesting against the death of six-year-old Aman, who was hit by a speeding vehicle near his Prem Vihar residence on the evening of Aug 14.

"The driver of the errant vehicle, Bhupender, had been arrested and later released on bail as per law," said the officer.

The agitators however, said the police had taken no action against the driver and let him go scot-free.

"The boy’s family, relatives and residents of the area started pelting stones at the police station, forced through the gates and set the S.H.O.’s gypsy ablaze. They then took to the streets and blocked traffic on the Mubarakpur highway," the officer said.

Police officers from the entire district then resorted to lathi charge to disperse the crowd.

Fifteen police officers were injured in the melee and 20 persons from the agitating mob were detained.
