The Ministry of Defence (MoD) official, found charred to death at his government-allotted apartment in south Delhi three days ago, had allegedly murdered his wife over a dispute triggered by a financial crisis before setting himself ablaze, police claimed on Tuesday.
Police said Yashkar Sinha, 43, a deputy director with the Directorate General of Medical Services (DGMS), was the sole executor of the murder-cum-suicide at the first-floor apartment at Hudco Place. His wife Archana, 33, was a classical dance teacher.
"The cause of Yashkar's death, as per post-mortem results, has been ascertained to have been due to burn injuries as well as asphyxiation while his wife, Archana, has been found to have been strangled to death," said Rajan Bhagat, additional DCP and spokesperson, Delhi Police.
"It is a clear case of murder followed by suicide and no foul play has been detected. Initial investigation has also revealed that the couple's financial constraints could have triggered it," Bhagat added.
On Monday, Hindustan Times had reported on how the seemingly mysterious deaths of the MoD official and his wife could have been the result of a bitter domestic scuffle — apparently triggered by a long-standing financial crisis, gone terribly wrong.
According to initial investigations, police said, the couple seems to have had a tiff as soon as Sinha went home from office on Friday evening.
"What followed was a heated confrontation with push coming to shove and an exhausted Archana suffering a head injury after being knocked to the ground by Yashkar. He then strangled her using her own yellow-coloured chunni," said a senior police officer.
Around half an hour later, police claimed, Sinha wrapped himself up in a latex-based blanket, covered his groin with a small mound of un-ironed laundry and set the blanket ablaze with a match.
Police claimed the sheer pain then made Sinha pass out with the smoke and the consequent soot from the smouldering linen finally choking him to death. Meanwhile, Archana's family told Hindustan Times that Sinha had 'bled them' financially over the years. Meanwhile, three days after registering a case of murder in the matter, the police recorded the statements of Archana’s kin on Monday.
