Gujarat Congress leaders have complained to Congress president Sonia Gandhi that statements made by Union ministers praising chief minister Narendra Modi is hurting the party in the state. Gandhi has reportedly endorsed their views.

In recent days, Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh’s praise of Narendra Modi’s Gujarat rankled the state leaders.

The issue came up during Gandhi’s ongoing interactions with her local leaders to take stock of organisational elections. Among the issues discussed were the political situation in the backdrop of rising prices, surge in Opposition aggressiveness, challenge of internal security and problems in Congress-ruled states.

Gandhi’s interaction comes ahead of her re-election as party chief, tentatively expected on July 25. The final date however will be decided by the Congress Working Committee which has not yet been called.

In the last two days, Gandhi has met leaders, including from Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, Bihar, Gujarat, West Bengal, Goa and Uttar Pradesh.
