Underworld don Abu Salem was on Wednesday produced before a Delhi Court by Mumbai Police in connection with an extortion case.
Salem, who was brought to Delhi from Arthur Road jail where he had been lodged after his extradition from Portugal in 2005, was produced before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja for making an alleged extortion call to Delhi businessman Rajat Nagrath six years ago.
The gangster is accused of demanding Rs 1 crore from Nagrath, owner of Allied Communications in East of Kailash. Besides Salem, two other accused in the case — PP Rai and Sadiq Ali) — were present in the court, but they are on bail.
The court allowed the Mumbai police to take Salem back as he was wanted there in connection with certain other cases pending against him in the western metropolis, but directed them to produce him before it here on December 12.
Salem’s counsel Arvind Kumar Shukla sought a copy of the chargesheet filed against Salem in the case that was allowed by the court. Salem is also wanted in another case of alleged extortion registered in the capital.
Meanwhile, the gangster asserted that Bollywood actress Monica Bedi was his wife. Responding to reporters’ query while coming out of the court, Salem said the two were husband and wife. Earlier, he had served a legal notice on Monica claiming he was “deeply hurt” and “distressed” by her statements denying their marriage.
In his notice, he had claimed that the duo got married in a mosque at Los Angeles in November 2000.
