Friday at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) was a repeat of previous days with four early morning flights getting diverted to nearby cities and more than 10 getting cancelled.

The fog ruined weekend Christmas plans of many travellers as more than 250 flights to all major destinations were delayed on Friday.

Visibility on all runways remained below 50 metres for more than six hours. Flights to many international and domestic destinations were delayed by more than five hours. The fog enveloped the airport till 10am.

"The visibility remained bad at runway 29 from 2am to 10:30am, while at runway 28 it started dipping at 4:30am. On Saturday, the situation is likely to improve, but fog is expected from Sunday evening onwards," said RK Jenamani, director of IGI Airport MeT department.

Flights from destinations such as Doha, Abu Dhabi and Dubai were diverted to Jaipur. Passengers flying into Delhi from Doha had a harrowing experience as their flight was diverted to Jaipur and they were delayed by more than five hours.

"My Jet Airways flight from Doha was to land at Delhi airport around 5 in the morning, but it was diverted to Jaipur due to dense fog at IGIA and we could return to Delhi only at 10:30am," said Joe, a passenger.

Flights on international and domestic routes such as Jaipur, Lucknow, Ludhiana, Kathmandu, Dhaka, Singapore and Colombo remained affected due to fog.

The morning fog hampered operations of flights through out the day.

"My Singapore airlines flight was to land at 10:20am, but it landed at 11am. It hovered around for some time before it could land," said Vishal Sharma, another passenger.
