In the first incident, a five-year-old resident of southwest Delhi’s Kapashera was assaulted by a 22-year-old neighbour identified as one Lalit, a hotel management student, last Wednesday.

“According to her parents’ complaint, the victim was playing outside her residence when she was lured by Lalit on March 8 evening,” said an officer.

After sexually assaulting her, Lalit warned her against revealing anything about the incident to her parents.

However, she chose to confide in her parents who later took her to the local police station, police said.

Lalit was arrested immediately after a medical examination of the victim confirmed that she had been sexually assaulted.

Meanwhile, a 32-year-old man, apparently incensed at a 10-year-old for having slapped his nephew, sexually assaulted her at southeast Delhi’s Tughlaqabad extension on Friday evening.

The victim was on her way to buy vegetables from the local market when the accused abducted her in a moving auto-rickshaw.

She was then taken to a secluded forested area where he forced himself on her before dropping her back near her residence.

“Later, during investigation, it turned out that the victim had slapped the assailant’s nephew and impaired his hearing. He is still admitted in hospital. This was apparently why the assailant chose the victim,” said an officer.

Police refused to divulge the identity of the accused in the interest of investigation.

A case has been registered and the search for the absconding assailant is underway.

Delhi has witnessed around four rape cases a day this year, almost double the last year’s rate. The city witnessed a total of 181 rapes between January one and February 15, minister of state for home affairs Mullappally Ramachandran told Rajya Sabha.
