The Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha on Thursday urged the Delhi High Court to dismiss a plea filed by Matia Mahal MLA Shoaib Iqbal to restrain the Archaelogical Survey of India (ASI) from demolishing a structure erected near the Jama Masjid.

The court had on July 30 asked the ASI to demolish the illegal construction to ascertain if the remains of a Mughal-era Akbarabadi mosque existed at the Metro railway project site near Subhash Park as claimed by Iqbal and his supporters.

"The contents ... (of plea of MLA Shoaib Iqbal) are misconceived, distorted and twisted and the same contents are nothing but an attempt by intervener Iqbal to frustrate and delay the compliance of the order passed by the High Court...," ABHM plea filed by its Vice President SS Sai Baba Om Jee, said.

Iqbal, accused of aiding the illegal construction, had in his plea also demanded the constitution of a committee of eminent citizens to assist the ASI to ascertain if the remains of a Mughal-era Akbarabadi mosque existed at the site.
