Prabha Jha, BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP, has sent back a gift box of liquor sent by Vijay Mallya with “protest”. Mallya is the chairman of the United Breweries and a former Rajya Sabha MP.

Jha said he was appalled by Mallya’s action.

Considered close to the RSS and BJP chief Rajnath Singh, Jha said the distribution of such gifts lowered the dignity and responsibility of parliamentarians and was not in tune with the Indian “tradition.”

In his letter to Mallya, Jha said he was surprised to receive “a box of liquor bottles sent by you at my official residence” as he has never met Mallya.

Acceptance of such gifts, the MP said would be seen as act of greed and send a wrong message to his family and others.

Jha reminded Mallya that drinking was still a major problem in the country and he was distributing boxes of liquor to MPs at a time when the Delhi government has proposed to levy a fine of Rs 5,000 on public drinking.
