Amid speculations about the Samajwadi Party joining the Congress-led UPA government, Mulayam Singh Yadav on Wednesday announced that he would not join the Union cabinet.
Addressing journalists here on Wednesday, Yadav said: “Even if there is one per cent possibility of the SP’s participation in the UPA government, at least I will not join the government,” adding he would “concentrate on the Lok Sabha elections in UP”.
The issue had come up for discussion at the party’s state executive committee meeting here earlier this week. Yadav had then assured the leaders that he would stay with them in the state.
In fact, there is a feeling in the party that Yadav, SP’s lone star campaigner, should not be bogged down with the ministerial responsibility at a crucial election time. They, however, want some others to join the ministry to galvanise the sullen cadre in the state.
He said neither was there any invitation nor the party had discussed about participation in the central government.
