Multi-modal transport system soon
Delhi will soon have a Multi-Modal Transport System on the lines of London's transport system. For this, a unique automatic fare collection system will also be put in place. Subhendu Ray reports.
Delhi will soon have a Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) on the lines of London's transport system. For this, a unique automatic fare collection system (AFCS) will also be put in place.
R.K. Verma, Commissioner, Transport Department, said: "We will start an electronic ticketing system in buses through AFCS and integrate other modes of transport with it. The system will be in place within eight months to a year."
In MMTS, two or more different modes of transportation are used for a single trip during and entails a change of mode mode of travel.
After unveiling a report on Delhi's future energy needs by World Energy Council (WEC) on Friday, Rakesh Mehta, Chief Secretary, Delhi said: "The transport department has done a feasibility survey. Delhi Integrated Multi Modal Transit System Ltd. (DIMTS) is the consultant for the same and once they complete the ground work, we will introduce it in Delhi."
The report has also recommended the government to put MMTS in place in a bid to boost the use of public transport facilities in Delhi. "This will not only ease traffic in the city but also save energy," said Pradeep Chaturvedi, chairman, WEC.
Once this system is introduced, one can buy a day ticket and travel anywhere in the city by any mode of transportation for the whole day. There will be a provision of monthly smart card as well, said a senior Delhi Government officer.
Smita Mathew, Deputy Manager, DIMTS, said: "We started a pilot project of AFCS in Dwarka a couple of months ago. We will cover all of Delhi by March or April."
Ajay Chadha, Special CP (Traffic), said: "The system, once in place, will make traffic management in Delhi easier. This system will encourage people to avail public transport to travel in and around the city."
